So it might be totally insane, but I dropped some kohlrabi seeds into one of my AG pods the other day. I've also got broccoli rabb going in the same AG. Who knows how the kohlrabi will do...it looks like from the pictures that the really fat part of it would be above the pod...we'll see!

Oh, keep us posted! I'd be especially interested to see how broccoli raab does! I've got seeds and am trying to grow some outdoors.

Update on my kohlrabi!  He was incredibly slow growing.  For the longest time, all he had was a few leaves poking out.  Of course, I planted him with broccoli raab, which grow big strong stalks that were hogging the light.  Finally, his leaves got bigger and he finally formed the characteristic kohlrabi "bulb."

The raab was beginning to bolt and my catnip was almost done as well, so I decided to clean out the garden yesterday.  Here's the kohlrabi in the garden (partially blocked by that determined raab!).  The bulb part of the plant kind of grew up in the air, with some of the leaves propping it up.

Here it is once out of the garden:

I haven't tasted it yet.  I'm going to steam it with some broccoli for our side dish tonight for christmas dinner (we're making braised lank shanks).  Smiley

So, my experiment shows that kohlrabi can be successful in the AG, but it is very slow going!

So I tried my kohlrabi raw and then once steamed.  Raw, it tasted just like raw radish.  Steamed, it didn't taste like much of anything.  I steamed it with broccoli and the broccoli was fully cooked after 13 minutes in the steamer but the kohlrabi was still pretty crunchy.

Next time, I'm going to leave it raw and use it in salad.

Julie,

thanks for posting a follow up, i was wondering about the results of your taste test yesterday. I am sorry it wasn't awesome, but at least it wasn't a bad taste  Wink I would call this a successful experiment.
