Now that's looking on the bright side Marianne! Thanks for the encouragement and kind words. They may not be pretty, but they are still good eating.   Grin

Right on Ellen!  I've been eating 'bolted' lettuce for a couple of weeks now.  Still tastes great.

My thought exactly Orlando Jude. Lettuce gardens are not pretty when bolting, but they still produce a lot of yummy stuff. I'm in the AG thing mostly to grow stuff I can eat, so it does necessarily have to be pretty. If it keeps producing, I'll keep growing it. LOL!

Here is the romaine before the trim:

Here it is after:

The harvest in a 2 quart bowl. The rest will probably come off and be replanted this weekend coming.

It's bolting bad, but is still putting off new growth. I thought to kill it off this next weekend, but am again having second thoughts.

Ellen,

I was looking at my salad green and they are bolting too.  The ones that are bolting had too many plants in the pod at 5-6 and they tried to grow out which ever way to get more room and light.  I think I will only put maximum 4 seeds per pod from seed packs I know that are close to 100% germination.

In my experience Mary, it bolts when it bolts most likely due to temp or age of the garden. I've done small amouts of seeds and large amounts, not making any difference in the bolting time.

I'm still kinda thinking I might not give up on quite yet Kim Marie... Grin

But if I do the same seeds will be replanted, I think.

Ha! Your lettuce looks like mine does - all vine-y and crazy. Is it supposed to be like that? I've never done lettuce before and each time I look at mine I swear it looks weird.

Erin, I've grown tons of lettuce. It does look like that and it's completely normal when it starts bolting. I am harvesting the rest of this one tomorrow and will be planting a new one. Not much new growth this week, so it's about time.

Thanks for weighing in. Every time I look at it I swear it's not supposed to look like that. LOL

I am growing romaine once my salad greens kit poops out on me.

Hi Ellen,

It sound like you'll be starting up a couple of new gardens soon - I also noticed your post on the dill.  I always really enjoy starting a new one!
