Tomande tomato; heirloom shape with hybrid yield!

Well, I've grown herbs, tomatoes, and lettuce, so I can testify that all 3 are good choices.  Unfortunately, I got 3 choices   Tongue

Herbs would be the best.  They're much better home-grown, they're cost-efficient, and you broaden your library of cooking recipes when using them.  Plus, they're attractive  Wink

Lettuce on the other hand tastes exactly like store-bought (though more nutritious), and tomatoes take forever to grow the few tomatoes they actually produce..

I voted for salad greens simply because they are easy to grow and no pruning needed just harvesting.

To me, it depends on why you want the AG.  My AG3, for example, is at work where its purpose is to provide light, color and cheer to my lightless, airless, soulless cubicle--so I gorw flowers there.  I am toying with the idea of chili peppers.  We'd never use the number that would grow in a 6 or 7 pod model, which is what I have at home.  A 3 might provide just the right amount, and the plants would be colorful and attractive to boot.

But if you're more interested in practical uses, I'd got for herbs.  A 3 would produce enough lettuce for one person every feew days; but there are all sorts of combinations of herbs one might grow with all the potential for fabulous meals that that would provide.

Classic (salad greens), AG3 (down to just a geranium, but it's stunning!), AG6 (classic herbs) and  Elite + (mega-cherry tomato), AG3 (chili peppers) and an AG3 at work (snapdragons, petunias and blue brachycomb)

Hi Littlechef,

I voted in the other thread but will repeat it here since more seem to have voted here.

My vote was for the Gourmet herb, Pesto Basil (love Basil) and Romaine...

I have helped by Mom setting up her AG SS6 and done a mix of Gourmet herb and 1 salad green pod.  Salad green is decent but I heard Romaine is a better producer.  If you want to stay away from flower, I would not go for tomatoes right away since you have to prune and pollinate.  Better get a herb or salad under your belt first.

I actually think it is more cost effective to buy a AG6 kits and split it over 2 seasons rather than getting a AG3 kit.  This is especially true for the tomato kits. You get 3 plants (2 red and 1 yellow) and 3 spacers for $20 whereas you pay $15 for 1 plant and 2 spacers.

Although if you want herbs, I would recommend getting the herb for marinade for herb and dressing kit (6 pod) on sale at Amazon for around $8 since it is only one pod away fom the gourmet herb kit. it would be easy to split to two AG3s growing season and you can do some pod seed replacement with your own seeds if you don't like certain herbs.  Amazon does free shipping if you order over $25.

 Wink
I would have to agree with Shane,  the salad greens are the most productive of the bunch.  I got a lot of good salads off of mine. Harvest and eat is never a bad thing.
